What specific effect is the information age having on religion?

I already know that religion is in decline in the first-world nations - there was a recent poll in the US showing a sizable rise in atheism and agnosticism, and other first-world nations have been similarly dropping religiosity.

First, do you think the ease-of-access to information (courtesy of mass media and the internet) is directly involved? If not, then what is the major cause?

Second, if you do believe information to be the culprit, what specifically, is information doing to drop religious adherence?|||The true source of change is discontent. When someone is not content with their personal beliefs, they will naturally search for others who think likewise.

The information age presents the unprecedented opportunity to quickly share ideas with those beyond local cultural walls. Now, people have the ability to see how other people choose to live, globally, and exchange ideas like never before. It's this rapid exchange of ideas that instigates alternative living and beliefs at a rate never before possible.|||Answer to your first question, yes, media is directly involved.

Answer to the second, is that now we can see the fanaticism that is normally tucked out of sight and it's scaring people off in droves. Westboro Baptist Church is enough to make me embaressed to admit my faith.|||"you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free" - jesus

the information age promotes finding truth instead of just believing tradition, and thus promotes the decline of religion|||The Christian faith is spreading into nations where the Gospel is banned thanks to the existance of the Internet.

Praise God for the Internet.
