Is there a law to prevent employers from disclosing information about a termination?

I've read that if an employer has legitimate access to employees (or past employees) information, they still needs legitimate reasons to share this information with others. If they does share any information from an employees file to someone that does not have legitimate reasons of knowing this information, it can be a violation of the law. Is disclosing privacy act information to others a violation of law? If so, which law?|||While some states have laws restricting such release of information it isn't the law in all or even most states. In most states the as long as the employer is telling the truth about a termination they are in the clear.|||by law yes, but in the end it all comes down to money,, if they tell someone your info, do you have to money to sue them. ?|||Generally no, unless medical info is involved, then there might be legal issues with HIPAA
