How much information about other groups is gained by actual contact?

How much information about other groups do you get from actual contact with that group? This is opposed to getting your information from said group from other sources (prejudiced parents/friends/associates, the media, etc.). |||The information gained by actual contact can be tilted to either negative or positive depending ont the geographic location, and social conflicts that are important at the moment.

If a white person would have chilled with blacks for the first time ever when the Jena six trial was going on ..I doubt they would have been friendly and kind to that white person if she was in New orleans. that would make her think all black people are racist and angry

But if a white woman is chilling with a bunch of black people on the day Obama is sworn in they will all be happy and smiling and she will think black people are nice|||most, I live in and school in a very diverse community|||i go by how a person treats me..i don't try to place people into groups...people are people..|||i think this quesiton is directed towards racist but i'll answer anyways i dont judge or answer untill i have had first hand experience or contact other wise i would be invalid.|||roughly 95%, though contact with a group in one area, region or neighborhood does not typify the group as a whole.|||As far as cultural info? I prefer to go with what I see, so I guess I only trust info from people within the group and my observations of them. I mean I trust good anthropologists, but I definately don't trust sources that are not from the group or do not take an objective scientific observational approach.

Personally- I don't like making generalizations on entire groups. Groups are made of individuals and I prefer to make judgments on an individual basis. Groups are not homogeneous enough to place a fair judgment upon the whole group, too much variation.|||Alot.. i love diversity

SteveC|||I think abt 20%. It all depends on how u were raised and in wht type of enviroment. Im black but from ages 3 to 16 i lived in a mostly white area. Most of my info on other cultures even my own was gained thru the media and my family. When i started to be around other black and hispanic people it was a culture shock. Even though we are the same race it was hard to relate to some of the issues that they face. Its very important to be in an environment that is diverse.|||i live in southern california, in a city of 100,000 people near san diego, and I go to a public school. i see illegal mexicans often.. They loiter alot around the grocery store i go to, and on street corners...as for asians.. they consist of all my friends, they may be smart, but ive noticed they all lack common sense.. and black people? some are lovely, although i find it really funny how the majority at my school dress like gangbangers and run around like they're all tough, when in fact we live in a suburb... thats growing more diverse every year.

just my observations .
